Looking for WWII Liaison communicators on allied ships
A historian is writing a scholarly article about RN liaison personnel placed aboard Allied warships from Poland, Norway, Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia
and Greece during World War II. To ensure effective communication in English, safeguard codes and assorted confidential books, and to advise the
Allied ship about dealing with RN establishments, the RN placed a liaison staff aboard each Allied warship of minesweeper size or larger. The staffs
differed in size depending on ship type. In general, a surface ship would have one Sub-Lieutenant or Lieutenant RNVR as the British Naval Liaison Officer (BNLO) plus 6-8 ratings. The mix of ratings included telegraphists, signalmen and coders. On a submarine the staff was a BNLO plus one
telegraphist and one signalman, with both ratings usually a leading rate or petty officer. The BNLO was sometimes a former communications branch rating
who had earned a CW commission.
Any RNCA member who served on liaison duty during World War II or who knows someone (living or deceased) who did is encouraged to contact Mark C. Jones by e-mail to share their stories of liaison duty. The e-mail address is:
