The Bosun’s Call still pipes “The Still”,
“The Side” and “Call the hands” so clear and trill,
Daily Orders by keyboard – now typed and “disted”
And to read on notice boards yet still listed

The Chevy and the Whaler alas superseded
Their role (and beauty) no longer needed.
For Boarding Ops two RIBs for pace,
GPS and Rifles – no time for grace.

Damage Control – State One isn’t lost
On Modern Jack as he works through OST.
Stokers now called E.T.M.E.s
Working towards Engineering Degrees!

Chief AWW now the GI’s gone,
But with Drill and Gunnery still has his fun.
Lookouts now for Subs and Aircraft
And Dolphins – YES I’m not being daft!

But please I beg – don’t start to think
That today’s RN is all Fluffy and Pink
Jack’s conditions are better – a fact well known
And given half a chance, he’ll still have a moan

But of ethos, traditions and a warrior’s nerve
Out Jack and Jenny still proud to serve.
All to the good the advance of their lot
And not for a moment do they miss the Tot.

And finally to those who are able to say
They had their Tot each and every day,
Modern Jack is still proud of all that you’ve done
And will remember “at the setting of the Sun”
